The Conchord Singers
We are a small, friendly choir based in Southampton. We give at least two local concerts a
year, with music including folk songs, peace-songs, madrigals, other part songs, longer
classical works, classic popular songs and some new music, and raising money for various
charities. We are a very international group,
welcoming visitors from abroad from widely different musical traditions. We have a regular
exchange with the choir of St. André de L'Eure in Normandy.
A BIT OF BACKGROUND
We were founded by members of Southampton CND who enjoyed singing and began giving concerts,
led jointly by Rita March, Rita Leighton and Gordon Willis. The idea was to have fun and to raise money
for various good causes by performing peace-songs, madrigals, folksongs, other part-songs, and anything
else we could manage. These are still our aims. Shortly afterwards, the choir was permanently
constituted under Donald Hughes, who established links with the international organisation
Sing for Pleasure. When Donald retired in 1996 he was succeeded by Gordon Willis, who worked
with us until this year and greatly extended our repertoire.
We are now working with two conductors: Craig Lawton and Rita Leighton
